Job posting for: HIFY Youth Outreach Workers (YOWs), 16-21 yrs. old
Reports to:  Program Coordinators
Salary:  $1500 stipend for 9 months

Position Summary:
We are looking for 3 Oakland and 3 San Francisco youth to become Youth Outreach Workers in HIFY’s Health Outreach Program. These PAID positions are open for youth who need internships, community service credits, and volunteer hours. The program’s mission is linking HIV+ youth to care. YOWs will work closely with HIFY staff to outreach as a team in community neighborhoods. Yow will also plan and participate in community events, HIFY events, and other related activities.

Time Commitment:
HIFY’s YOWs will participate in a 9month program, beginning September 22nd, 2010 and continuing through June 2011 with opportunities to remain through 2012. The YOWs will meet Wednesdays and Fridays from 3-6pm.

The team will participate in weekly meetings, street outreach, and any HIFY trainings that are offered on HIV & Outreach.  

Youth Outreach Workers are HIFY employees and will be stipend $15oo for the beginning 9 months.  They will receive extensive training on health issues affecting the Oakland and San Francisco community, interpersonal and group communication skills, and knowledge of various forms of oppression (including ageism, racism, sexism, homophobia, and classism) as they relate to health and well being.

Qualifications

Candidates Must:

  • Successfully complete the HIV outreach and Role Play training
  • Complete prompt collection of data form all people engaged
  • Be knowledgeable about and comfortable with working in Oakland and San Francisco neighborhoods heavily impacted by HIV
  • Be eligible to receive a work permit from school- if necessary
  • Express interest in learning about community health issues
  • Show ability to commit to the program for the full year (ie. Have held a job for a long period of time, have participated in a school, church or community group for a period of time, have followed through with other time commitments longer than 3 months, etc.)
  • Have access to transportation to the BART accessible location in downtown San Francisco (Oakland location TBA) 2 times per week during the year.
  • Not have commitments to other clubs, sports teams, or activities that conflict with weekly scheduled meetings throughout the year
  • Enjoy working with diverse community of people (LGBT, and Homeless youth community) and is respectful of differences
  • Be committed to learning about oppression and how it affects community health and the HIV epidemic
  • Be energetic, charismatic, and caring and want to help educate your peers in making healthy, safe, and positive decisions for their lives!
