Zines and Others
We've recently scanned the majority of our publications and are working to make them available online. Check them out and let us know if you are interested in getting a hard copy- we still have some back issues!
Pretty Girls reclaims what the word pretty suggests and includes all spectrums of beauty. Pretty Girls is about freedom of expression, empowerment, self-love, strength, celebration, and joy. Pretty girls offers information that will help young women make healthy decisions about their lives and bodies. Pretty Girls celebrates each other's uniqueness and encourages young women to feel good about who they are. Discontinued in 2008.
Vital Signs is written by and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning youth and their allies. This zine features voices from the community, while providing relevant health information and resources often missing from school textbooks. Vital Signs was discontinued in 2003.
Spill is our general youth health zine, tackling a range of health topics through themes such as control, taboos, and rites of passage. Spill was discontinued in 2003.
From 1993 to 2000, we published Reality, a zine by and for HIV+ youth. Building a comunity of those living with HIV, young people came together through its pages to share stories and information, to comfort and inspire each other.
In 1998, HIFY published the first ever Thrive Guide, a survival manual for young people newly diagnosed as HIV+. While the treatment information should no longer stand on its own, much of the emotional territory it covers remains starkly relevant.
Bridges, our provider newsletter, was produced from 1995 to 2003. This newsletter blended research-based best practices with provider interviews and highlights of the latest research. Back issues cover HIV, cutting, faith-based sexuality education, mental health for immigrant youth, transgender and intersex youth, positive sexuality, and youth empowerment.
Epicenter, HIFY's agency newsletter provides a look at the past of our beloved agency.
Unfortunately, our zines (Spill, Vital Signs, Reality) have been discontinued. However, we have a new set of zines coming soon. Our new program FABULOUS! is getting ready to launch a new series of youth created "street survival" zines. But we will let you know more about it once we start producing some new material.
We do have some back issues available at our office from most of our previous published zines if you want to pick some up! Just drop by our office or send us an email to make sure we have in stock wat you are looking for. And yes, they are all free.
